what an incredible class!
One question: is it wrong to let the kick finish (the tail of formwave) before the first bass note?

No it`s not wrong. There are various methods, one of them is having the kick very short, and not “colide ” with the bass, the other is to adjust the phasing of the kick properly and use tools like sidechain compression or volume shaping (iE ShaperBox 2) to mitigate any frequency conflicts
